Omg! The Best Caregiving Ever!
Mary Pembleton is a rare person who made full-time caregiving work as a job. If you notice signs that an older family member is no longer able (or seemingly interested) in living with a basic amount of dignity, socialization and contentment, that person may very well benefit from the care, attention and understanding that can be provided by care facilities. Not only does depression affect a person's perspective, it also adversely affects the immune system, making a depressed person that much more susceptible to further physical ailments. Also, depressed seniors may withdraw into a cocoon of isolation, making it next to impossible for others to reach out to them or just lend an ear. Only 30% of seniors over the age of 70 who could benefit from hearing aids have ever used them. I really enjoy working with our families and seniors and assisting them with their senior care service needs. The number of days in the hospital paid for by Medicare is governed by a system based upon patient diagnosis and medical necessity for hospital care. This human cost was examined in depth in a recent study by scientists from the University of Michigan Health System and the Veterans Administration Ann Arbor Healthcare System, based on survey responses from 10,626 heart failure patients 65 years of age and older. A large percentage of health care costs associated with heart failure are because of the need to hospitalize patients. An even higher percentage (more than 40 percent) of women will suffer from heart failure within that period of time after having a heart attack.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 20 percent of men will develop heart failure within six years of having a heart attack. So, they’re bitter about not having their every need met and make that resentment well known. This is where caregivers must take a stand. After a patient receives a diagnosis of heart failure, he or she will need lifelong treatment for the condition. Treatment is available for heart failure, but it can't be cured. Since the American Heart Association estimates that about 1 percent of all people over the age of 65 has heart failure, a significant increase in the prevalence of heart failure is expected in coming years. According to the National Institutes of Health, 550,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed and 300,000 deaths are caused by heart failure each year. Results of a National Hospital Discharge Survey show that the number of hospitalizations for heart failure has increased substantially, from more than 400,000 in 1979 to more than 1.1 million in 2004, accounting for almost 2 percent of all hospital admissions in the United States. The study found that at 90 days after discharge from the hospital, the group that had received ultrafiltration experienced a 43 percent reduction in rehospitalization for heart failure and a reduction in the number of rehospitalizations (50 percent) and emergency department or clinic visits (52 percent). Rehospitalization rates during the six months following discharge are as high as 50 percent. Heart failure occurs when the heart becomes weakened following a heart attack or from the long-term effects of high blood pressure. More effective treatments have resulted in improved rates of survival following heart attacks. This is true even though survival of patients with heart failure has improved due to treatment with heart medications. In a recent study of heart failure patients hospitalized with fluid overload, called the UNLOAD study (Ultrafiltration versus IV Diuretics for Patients Hospitalized for Acute Decompensated Congestive Heart Failure), scientists compared the use of traditional diuretic drug treatment to a procedure called ultrafiltration. Heart failure puts very significant health and financial burdens on patients, their families and society as a whole. Examples of patient involvement in decision-making about their health care include patient workshops and coaching, individual patient coaching. Caregivers may give care at home or in a hospital or other health care setting. Researchers have shown that even modest-sounding interventions can reduce their sense of isolation and improve their mental and physical health. The burden of providing care without outside help can deplete your family's resources and emotion well-being. It will take an adjustment period before your loved one fully gets settled into the care arrangement. Two members residing in the same household could not be in receipt of the benefit for the same period. In contrast, women caregivers leave the work force more abruptly and are more likely to return - after just two years, on average - "but at lower wages or fewer hours," Dr. Truskinovsky said. Caregivers were identified among BCBS members who have a spouse or child needing caregiver support. The third section will look at emotional ties across generations and explore the extent to which aging parents rely on their children and grown children rely on their parents for emotional support. "You can say: ‘At some point, before we have a crisis, I’d love to know what your thoughts are for if something were to happen; that way I can support you in this,’" she said.
